CONCLUSION

So...

There should be more homeless shelters and faculties for those in need, as homeless people are humans just like the rest of us, and people should definitely sympathize to homeless people, because with the right foundations, charities, help and support, homelessness could be overcome, and homeless people will be able to make a change in their lives.

NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR YOUTH SHELTER

I believe that all youth deserve a home

Over 500000 young people experience homelessness every year throughout our nation. Despite that staggering figure, there are only 4000 youth shelter beds across the country. This forcesthe majority of homeless youth to struggle for survival on the streets.

The National Campaign for Youth Shelter is a collaborative effort between the Ali Forney Center and the National Coalition for the Homeless to build a grassroots movement demanding a national commitment to house all the homeless youth in the country.

REASONS GIVEN BY HOMELESS PEOPLE FOR BEING HOMELESS

The three main reasons for having lost a last settled home, given by applicants for homelessness support from local councils are: parents, friends or relatives unwilling or unable to continue to accommodate them relationship breakdown, including domestic violence loss of an assured shorthold tenancy.
However, these reasons are only the catalysts that trigger people into seeking assistance, and not the underlying issues that have caused the crisis to build up in the first place.
For many people, there's no single event that results in sudden homelessness. Instead, homelessness is due to a number of unresolved problems building up over time.

WHAT CAUSES HOMELESSNESS?

Sadly, many people view homelessness as the result of personal failings, and consider that if the economy is going well, there is no excuse for not getting on.
But this belief is belied by the facts, which show that homelessness is caused by a complex interplay between a person's individual circumstances and adverse 'structural' factors outside their direct control.
These problems can build up over years until the final crisis moment when a person becomes homeless.

HOMELESS SHELTER

1. Storage Units

Many have called storage units the modern-day cardboard box. Sure, they’re not ideal, but they’re dry, secure and beat the dangers of the street. And they offer a way for people to keep some of their belongings rather than abandon them or have them stolen.

2. Cars

Living out of a vehicle may seem like a bearable solution to losing one’s home. But when your home is on four wheels, it’s impossible to sit still. Each day, you must be on the go to evade authorities and the expensive citations for illegal parking or sleeping in a vehicle (Yes, there are ordinances against this.)

3. Parks

After walking all day or night, it’s tempting for a homeless man or woman to stretch out on the lawn or a bench for some rest. Parks are open to the public and a decent place to get a nap during the day. But sleeping in the park at night is usually interrupted by police asking offenders to move along.

4. Streets

While it may seem counter-intuitive that a homeless person would choose to stay on the streets rather than in a homeless shelter, there are understandable reasons for doing so. Shelters tend to attract people who are chronically homeless and addicted. This can be frightening to someone newly homeless or to those who struggle with mental illness or social phobias.

We Don’t Know
For all of those homeless individuals whose unfortunate living situations are documented, recorded, and broadcast to the public, there are hundreds more who remain anonymous. The methodology for finding and counting homeless people is imperfect; we simply do not find everyone.

So...

it's an important issue  in which  our society is involved  day after day. Let's stop this phenomenon that causes ravages in our young people and the best way for doing it could be focus on preventing problems, rather than waiting to fix them.
Could be better stop with familiar problems and to start  understanding to your guys.

PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION

Various types of treatment for substance-abusing runaway adolescents has been found effective, including community reinforcement approach, motivational interviewing, and ecologically-based family therapy, with motivational interviewing showing the quickest results according to an article in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.
Sadly, some youth are more accurately called “throwaways” than “runaways.”  Some parents sexually abuse their children or allow others to do so.  Parents who are consumed by their substance abuse problems may lack the emotional or physical resources to care for their children. Contacting a child abuse hotline when abuse is suspected may allow social workers to intervene before a child becomes a runaway.  In the United States and Canada, abuse can be reported at The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline 1-800-4-A-CHILD

CONSEQUENCES OF LIFE ON THE STREET FOR HOMELESS AND RUNAWAY YOUTH

  • Difficulty attending school due to lack of required enrollment records (such as immunization and medical records and proof of residence) as well as lack of access to transportation to and from school.

  • Increased likelihood of high-risk behaviors, including engaging in unprotected sex, having multiple sex partners and participating in intravenous drug use.

  • Greater risk of severe anxiety and depression, suicide, poor health and nutrition, and low self-esteem.

  • Increased likelihood of exchanging sex for food, clothing and shelter (also known as "survival sex") or dealing drugs to meet basic needs.

Common Reasons Why Youth Become Runaways

  • Family problems: Many youth run away, and in turn become homeless, due to problems in the home, including physical and sexual abuse, mental health disorders of a family member, substance abuse and addiction of a family member, and parental neglect.

  • Transitions from foster care and other public systems: Youth who have been involved in the foster care system are more likely to become homeless at an earlier age and remain homeless for a longer period of time.

  • Economic problems: Some youth become homeless when their families fall into difficult financial situations resulting from lack of affordable housing, difficulty obtaining or maintaining a job, or lack of medical insurance or other benefits.

Runaways/Throwaways... What is it?

Runaways

Homelessness among young people is a serious issue. Homeless youth, sometimes referred to as unaccompanied youth, are individuals who lack parental, foster or institutional care.* The National Runaway Switchboard estimates that on any given night there are approximately 1.3 million homeless youth living unsupervised on the streets, in abandoned buildings, with friends or with strangers.

Thrownaways

The Throwaways is a personal exploration of the devastating impact of police brutality and mass incarceration on the black community told through the eyes of formerly incarcerated activist filmmaker Ira McKinley.  With rawness, urgency and power, this award-winning documentary film speaks directly to the national movement rising up to fight back against a wave of police killings of black people in America.
